Course Overview

This week long day camp is a crash course in multidisciplinary video game design. Students will team up and learn how to program 2D video games with the free and open-source Godot engine. Students will learn about the art pipeline as they hand-draw, animate, and integrate their own art assets, and even how to compose and record music for their games. Students will also learn how to use Git, an open-source, industry-standard version control system, for managing their team’s project. At the end of the week, students will have a finished video game to showcase.

What Is Godot Engine?

Godot is a free, open-source game engine used to build complete 2D and 3D games. It is a professional toolchain that students can keep using long after camp.

In this camp, students use traditional coding with GDScript. If your student has used visual scripting tools like Scratch, this is a great next step: code gives more control, scales to bigger projects, and builds skills used in advanced game development.

Ideal Candidates

The ideal candidates for this camp are high school students who are computer-savvy and creative. They have coded some before, but they may not have used Godot. They are interested in the practice of game design, and open to learning how to draw and how to compose music.
